St Valentine's day too commercial and not fun for singles

34 comments  Add a comment

Valentine's Day is here again and the shops are going crazy just falling over each other to ram those stupid romantic gifts down your throat at every opportunity.  Every other shop window is filled with red roses, heart shaped cards and of course chocolates.

If you're in a relationship there's an amazing amount of pressure to buy this tacky rubbish and to be honest I think it is more aimed at women than men.  I reckon most guys aren't really bothered, but the girlfriends expect some sort of token on the 14th of February or there will be hell to pay!

I'll bet that some of you are thinking that if the boys had been more appreciative of their partners throughout the year, then they wouldn't have to go out to impress on Valentine's Day.  Apparently men aren't that good at remembering important dates anyway!

Should you happen to not be in a relationship at this time of year, you don't get an easy ride either.  In fact, for those people unfortunate enough to be made single around this time of year, Valentine's Day can be a painful reminder with all the commercial stuff, the cards, the hearts, flowers, chocolate, fluffy teddy bears etc. in the shops.  On the radio and the TV there are endless messages of love and romance.  It really makes you feel very much more lonely than you would at any other time of year.

St. Valentine's day gift, chocolate hearts and flowers just another excuse to spend money on junk...

Actually, the whole spectacle just irritates me; particularly the way some couples just lap it up and get sucked into the whole thing.  It's nothing more than yet another commercially driven extravaganza just like Christmas and Easter.

Valentine?s Day has become just another excuse to spend money on junk that has no substantial value.  Spend your money instead on a few spontaneous meals now and then and a nice bottle of wine, or even better save up and have a nice holiday together.

Strange to post a comment about this in October. This seems another example of bland, ineffectual and dull comments designed to drown out other more relevant issues. TWG is being targeted I think??

It is a waste I felt this way when I was with my fiancee ( wasnt the reason we broke up) at the end of the day you have another 364 days to tell your other half. Ill be damned if i am going to do it differently on the 14th feb just because companies want me to ^^;

All chocolate boxes over £10 per single item should pass immediately a quality control check - the collective chocolates and the state of the box looked at rigidly. All soft-centres under a block of hard toffee should immediately be passed into the collective dustbin and ownership of the rest shared among the occupants of the testing station - block the sale otherwise.

Chocolate ownership and prices in this country of them is absolutely absurd.

It’s rather odd that the two characters in history that St Valentine is based on porked their way around the Roman Empire and no doubt cause a few marriage splits along the way.

The difference between commitment and debauchery appears to have been lost in the annals of time.

Therefore once a year does a bunch of flowers and a card show love or guilt.

Save your money and buy her a house its cheaper in the long run.

Even more romantic is when you drive along a country road and see a cluster of sweet flowers growing next to the road in front of you and your date seems surprised to see them and instead of moving over to the right hand side of the motor vehicle sometimes of they stay on the left and some go to the right and leave little room for you to to stay comfy, I've had to almost stop on more than one occasion while they sorted themselves out...mad !

I agree. It's annoying if you're single-couples are disgusting enough on normal days. And if you're in a relationship, you should be glad of that every day, not just on the day you have to waste money on foil hearts and gross Teddy bears.

I'm not anti Valentine but it really is a massive rip off.I still have the cards that we sent each other 30 years ago and we put them on the mantle piece every year then back in their boxes for the next! Sentiment is still the same so why buy new?

There is a tavern in the town, in the town,
And there my dear love sits him down, sits him down,
And drinks his wine 'mid laughter free,
And never, never thinks of me.

Chorus:
Fare thee well, for I must leave thee,
Do not let the parting grieve thee,
And remember that the best of friends must part, must part
Adieu, adieu, kind friends adieu, adieu, adieu,
I can no longer stay with you, stay with you,
I'll hang my harp on a weeping willow tree,
And may the world go well with thee.

Aussie , I am not critisizing you but you need to look at what seems to be a pattern of the same things happening perhaps you should move a little nearer to were your partner is so that you can spend more time together I do not suggest that you should be joined at the hip but as they felt comfortable enough to do what they did suggests that you are not home a lot and are so predictable that they felt sure you would not come back , have faith in yourself and confidence and break the predictability mould go for a different type of person next time looks are not everything.
